Does biotin make hair grow faster?

Biotin is a B vitamin that is an important cofactor in hair growth.  So the big question is…DOES BIOTIN MAKE HAIR GROW FASTER????  The answer to that question is complicated.  How quickly your hair grows is generally genetically determined.  However, most people grow hair at a rate of 0.5 to 1 inch per month. If you don’t believe that, think about how often women get perms…every 6-8 weeks.  This is due to the NEW GROWTH!  The problem with women who’s “hair won’t grow” is that the hair breaks at a rate faster than the hair grows.  So if your hair is weak, you don’t see the length because the hair breaks off as it grows out of the scalp and anywhere along the shaft of the hair. THIS IS WHERE BIOTIN BECOMES VERY IMPORTANT.  Biotin essentially strengthens hair so there is no more breakage.  That way ALL the new growth is maintained.  So are there any studies that prove this? Yes there are many case reports of children who have genetically coarse fragile hair.  They took biotin and the doctors reported increased hair growth and improved hair strength and combability.  In addition, there are multiple other case reports in the literature that show that biotin deficiency causes hair loss and supplementation with biotin results in fast regrowth of the hair.  So the long answer is…technically biotin does make hair grow longer faster because it strengthens existing hair so there is less breakage.  The short answer…take your biotin daily and grow longer hair!
